Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist is Konami's fast Genesis beat-em-up, sending Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo after Shredder to stop him shrinking Manhattan with the stolen Hyperstone.

About Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist is a side-scrolling beat-em-up developed and published by Konami for the Sega Genesis. Released in 1992, it was Konami’s debut title for the Genesis and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game on the system. Its gameplay is closely based on the second arcade game, Turtles in Time, but it remixes that material with new stages and bosses rather than copying it stage for stage.

Shredder has stolen the Hyperstone, a treasure from Dimension X, and used it to shrink Manhattan Island. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo must fight through the city, a ghost ship, Shredder’s hideout and the Technodrome to take it back. With longer stages, faster enemies and a dedicated dash button, it became the Genesis answer to Turtles in Time and a firm favourite of the 16-bit beat-em-up era.

Detailed Gameplay

The Hyperstone Heist is a classic arcade brawler: walk right, clear each screen of Foot Soldiers and mutants, then face a boss. One or two players can play together, and a second player can even jump in mid-game.

Four turtles, four fighting styles

  • Leonardo leads with twin katanas and balanced speed and reach.
  • Donatello fights with his bo staff, giving him the longest reach of the four.
  • Raphael uses twin sais for fast, close-range attacks.
  • Michelangelo swings his nunchaku in wide arcs that are great for crowd control.

Combat, dashes and slams

  • Tap the attack button repeatedly for a combo that ends in a powerful finishing strike.
  • Hold the dash button to run, then attack for a charging strike or jump for a flipping attack.
  • Jump and attack in the air for a diving kick, and press attack and jump together for a desperation move that costs health.

Five long stages and a boss gauntlet

  • The five stages are New York City, A Mysterious Ghost Ship, Shredder’s Hideout, The Gauntlet and The Final Shell Shock.
  • Most stages contain several distinct sections, so each one feels longer than a typical arcade level.
  • Bosses include Leatherhead, Rocksteady, Tatsu, Baxter Stockman, Krang and Super Shredder.
  • The Gauntlet stage throws earlier bosses at you again, testing everything you have learned.

Game Highlights

  • A dedicated dash button: Running is instant and reliable, which makes the action feel faster than its SNES cousin.
  • Longer, denser stages: Five stages packed with multiple sections and heavier enemy waves.
  • A strong boss lineup: Leatherhead, Tatsu, Baxter Stockman, Krang and Super Shredder all appear.
  • Konami’s Genesis debut: The Turtles’ first Genesis outing, built on the arcade Turtles in Time formula.

Controls

On the Sega Genesis controller, the three face buttons handle the whole moveset. - D-Pad: Move your turtle left, right, up and down through the stage. - A Button: Attack with your turtle’s weapon, and repeat for combos. - B Button: Jump, and combine with attack for air attacks. - C Button: Dash in the direction you are holding. - A and B Buttons together: Perform a desperation attack that costs health. - Start Button: Pause the game and join in as the second player.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Speed and spacing win fights in The Hyperstone Heist, so do not stand still in a crowd. - Use the dash constantly to close gaps, escape surrounds and start charging attacks. - Save the desperation attack for bosses or when you are fully surrounded, because it drains your health. - Break barrels, crates and signs before moving on, since pizza is often hidden inside. - In two-player games, split the screen so one turtle draws enemies while the other attacks from behind.
