About Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Game Boy Advance)

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is an action-adventure game developed and published by Konami for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. In the year 2035, during a solar eclipse, exchange student Soma Cruz visits Japan’s Hakuba Shrine with his friend Mina Hakuba — and wakes inside Dracula’s castle, sealed within the eclipse itself. Soma discovers he can absorb the souls of monsters and wield their powers — a gift that also makes him a candidate to inherit Dracula’s throne.

Aria of Sorrow is widely considered the finest Castlevania on the GBA and one of the best in the series. Its Tactical Soul system turns every enemy into a potential new ability, its castle is dense with secrets and multiple endings, and its crisp art and soundtrack squeezed remarkable quality from the handheld.

Detailed Gameplay

You explore one large, interconnected castle, gaining new movement powers that open earlier areas: double jumps, sliding, gliding and warp rooms.

The Tactical Soul System

  • Bullet souls (red): Offensive abilities used with a button press, from throwing bones to hurling a giant axe, costing magic points.
  • Guardian souls (blue): Toggleable powers such as shields and summons that drain magic while active.
  • Enchanted souls (yellow): Passive bonuses — higher strength, luck, poison resistance or walking on water — active simply by being equipped.
  • Ability souls: Permanent movement skills like the slide, double jump and backdash that come from specific bosses and story moments.

Weapons, Bosses and Endings

Soma fights with swords, spears, axes and handguns rather than a whip. Money buys potions and gear from Hammer’s shop near the entrance. Bosses include Death, Legion — a sphere of bodies hiding a core — and Julius Belmont himself, the man who defeated Dracula in 1999. Which ending you earn depends on equipping three specific souls for the Graham fight and exploring the dark Chaotic Realm beyond it.

Game Highlights

  • Over 100 collectible souls: Every monster in the castle can drop a soul, turning completion into a joyful hunt.
  • Multiple endings: Three endings reward players who uncover the castle’s deepest secrets.
  • Superb GBA presentation: Detailed sprites, smooth animation and a standout soundtrack led by Michiru Yamane.

Controls

Soma’s soul-powered moveset fits the Game Boy Advance controls neatly.

  • D-Pad: Move and crouch; press Down plus B to slide once you have the Sliding soul.
  • A Button: Jump; press again in mid-air to double jump after gaining the Malphas soul.
  • B Button: Attack with the equipped weapon; press Up + B to fire the equipped bullet (red) soul, spending magic points.
  • R Button: Hold to activate the equipped guardian (blue) soul, draining magic while it is active.
  • L Button: Backdash — a quick backward hop that is essential for dodging boss attacks.
  • Start: Open the menu to equip souls and weapons, use items and save at save rooms across the castle.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Souls are power in Aria of Sorrow, so a little farming pays off all game long.

  • Raise your luck when farming souls: equip luck-boosting gear and target enemies near room doors so you can reset them quickly.
  • The Flame Demon, Lightning Doll and Succubus-type souls are not optional flavour: equipping the right three souls before fighting Graham is required to unlock the true path and best ending.
  • Hunt down the Claimh Solais, the game’s strongest sword, and keep the Headhunter soul in mind — it grows stronger as you collect more souls.
  • Save before every boss. The Black Panther soul, dropped late in the castle, is worth the hunt — its speed makes the final areas far safer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I play Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow online for free? A: Yes. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is playable in your browser on RiveGame with no downloads or installation — just open the game page and start playing.
