About Castlevania (NES)
Castlevania is an action platformer developed and published by Konami for the NES in 1986 in Japan and 1987 in North America. You are Simon Belmont, heir to a vampire-hunting family, who enters Count Dracula’s castle in 1691 armed with the legendary whip, Vampire Killer. Your mission is to fight through the castle’s halls, towers, and dungeons and destroy Dracula himself.
The game is famous for its gothic horror atmosphere, superb music, and demanding, deliberate platforming. Inspired by classic horror films, it pits Simon against mummies, Frankenstein’s monster, Death, and other iconic creatures. Castlevania launched a long-running series and set the template for stylish, challenging action platformers.
Detailed Gameplay
Castlevania is a side-scrolling action game built around careful movement and whip timing. Simon moves deliberately, so every jump and stair climb must be planned.
Fighting Through the Castle
- Crack the whip to defeat skeletons, bats, Medusa heads, and axe knights
- Climb stairs, cross crumbling bridges, and survive six stages divided into 18 blocks
- Break candles to reveal hearts, money bags, and powerful sub-weapons
Sub-Weapons and Hearts
Hearts are ammunition, not health. Spend them on sub-weapons found in candles: the dagger, holy water, axe, cross boomerang, and stopwatch, which freezes enemies for five hearts. Holy water is devastating against bosses when used well, while the cross covers both sides of Simon. Finding a double or triple shot lets you throw multiple sub-weapons at once.
Boss Encounters
Each stage ends with a classic horror boss, including the Giant Bat, Queen Medusa, the Mummies, Frankenstein’s Monster and Igor, Death, and finally Dracula, whose second form is one of the toughest fights on the NES.

Tips and Strategies to Win
Patience and sub-weapon management will carry Simon further than rushing ever will. - Keep holy water for bosses like Frankenstein’s Monster and Death — it stuns them in place. - Whip candles on every screen; the extra hearts and shot multipliers make a huge difference. - Watch Medusa head patterns and keep moving — standing still on stairs is especially dangerous. - Save your health before Dracula: use the pork chop hidden in the wall before the final climb.
