About F-Zero (SNES)

F-Zero is a futuristic racing game developed and published by Nintendo, released as a launch title for the SNES in Japan in 1990 and in North America in 1991. In the year 2560, wealthy merchants have created the F-Zero Grand Prix: anti-gravity machines tearing around lethal elevated circuits for the entertainment of the galaxy. You race as bounty hunter Captain Falcon, racer Dr. Stewart, the alien Pico or the villainous Samurai Goroh.

The game was Nintendo’s showpiece for Mode 7 graphics, which rotated and scaled the track beneath your machine to create a convincing sense of speed no rival console could match. With fifteen brutal tracks, a thumping soundtrack and no weapons — just pure driving — F-Zero founded a beloved series and still feels astonishingly fast.

Detailed Gameplay

Races are five-lap battles against nineteen rivals. Finishing position earns Grand Prix points, but running out of power or dropping off the track ends your run.

Machines and Handling

  • Blue Falcon: Captain Falcon’s all-rounder with balanced speed, grip and durability — ideal for learning the game.
  • Golden Fox: Dr. Stewart’s machine accelerates fastest but has a low top speed and fragile body.
  • Wild Goose: Pico’s heavy machine shrugs off collisions and grips well, at the cost of acceleration.
  • Fire Stingray: Samurai Goroh’s machine has the highest top speed but slow acceleration and loose handling.

Energy, Boosts and Hazards

Your machine’s power meter is also its health. Scraping barriers and rivals drains it, pit-zone strips restore it, and if it empties your machine explodes. From the second lap you earn a Super Jet boost for each lap completed, stored and fired whenever you choose. Tracks add jump plates, land mines, magnetic walls, slowing rough ground and, on Death Wind, crosswinds that shove your machine sideways. Grand Prix covers the Knight, Queen and King Leagues across three difficulties, while Practice lets you learn seven tracks and chase best times.

Game Highlights

  • Pure speed: No items or weapons — winning is about racing lines, nerve and clean overtakes.
  • Fifteen legendary tracks: Mute City, Big Blue, Port Town, Red Canyon and the dreaded Death Wind are genre classics.
  • Mode 7 spectacle: Smooth, rotating pseudo-3D circuits that defined what the SNES could do at launch.
  • Risk and reward: Boosts, jump shortcuts and a shared health-and-energy meter make every lap a gamble.

Controls

F-Zero uses the SNES controller simply, so everything comes down to your thumbs.

  • D-Pad Left / Right: Steer your machine; tap gently for fine adjustments at top speed.
  • D-Pad Down: Brake assist and helps tighten turns alongside leaning.
  • B Button: Accelerate — hold it down for the entire race.
  • Y Button: Brake for sharp corners like the Mute City hairpin.
  • A Button: Fire a stored Super Jet boost, earned after completing a lap.
  • L / R Buttons: Lean the machine left or right to carve through corners without losing speed.
  • Start: Pause the race.

Tips and Strategies to Win

F-Zero rewards drivers who learn each circuit’s one or two decisive corners.

  • Start with the Blue Falcon. The Fire Stingray’s top speed tempts everyone, but its slow acceleration makes recovering from one mistake miserable for beginners.
  • Boost on long straights and just before jump plates, never right before a hairpin — you will only arrive at the barrier faster.
  • Hug the inside of corners with L and R lean, and steer rivals into mines and barriers when they crowd you on narrow sections like Silence.
  • Use the pit zones every lap, even for a short top-up. A machine at half power cannot survive the final-lap pile-ups near the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
