Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar Heroes is Treasure's explosive Game Gear run-and-gun, mixing combinable weapons, acrobatic combat and huge boss battles into a portable action classic.
About Gunstar Heroes (GG)
Gunstar Heroes is a run-and-gun shooter developed by Treasure and published by Sega. Treasure’s debut game launched on the Sega Genesis in 1993, and this Game Gear version, ported by M2, followed in Japan on March 24, 1995. The handheld edition squeezes the Genesis hit onto a small screen, adding a jetpack section and the chance to drive a walker robot, while dropping the two-player mode and the Dice Palace stage to fit the hardware.
The evil Empire seeks four mystical gems to revive the ancient weapon Golden Silver, and only the Gunstar family stands in its way. You play as Gunstar Red or Blue, fighting through mines, ancient ruins and Empire bases packed with soldiers, robots and transforming war machines. Its weapon-combining system, acrobatic moves and inventive bosses made it Treasure’s calling card and one of the most celebrated run-and-gun games ever made.
Detailed Gameplay
Gunstar Heroes is a side-scrolling run-and-gun where movement is as much a weapon as your gun, with stages full of set pieces and surprises.
Free Shot and Fixed Shot
- Red uses Free Shot, letting you run and shoot at the same time for fast, aggressive play.
- Blue uses Fixed Shot, standing still while firing in eight directions for precise aiming.
- Both heroes can slide, jump, hang from platforms and throw enemies, including tossing a partner in co-op on Genesis.
Four weapons, many combinations
- You start with one of four weapons: Force for rapid bullets, Lightning for piercing lasers, Chaser for homing stars and Flame for a short-range flamethrower.
- Picking up a second weapon combines the two into a new shot, such as a homing fireball or a piercing flame beam.
- Weapon capsules dropped through stages let you swap and experiment without losing progress.
Stages, vehicles and set pieces
- Early stages can be tackled in your chosen order, from ancient ruins to an underground mine.
- Mine cart rides, rotating platforms and vertical climbs keep the action changing every few minutes.
- The Game Gear version adds a jetpack flight section and a drivable walker robot for extra variety.
Game Highlights
- Weapon fusion freedom: Combining Force, Lightning, Chaser and Flame creates shots no other run-and-gun offers.
- Two control styles: Free Shot and Fixed Shot make Red and Blue feel like genuinely different heroes.
- Treasure’s debut masterpiece: The studio’s first game set a bar for inventive bosses and set pieces.
- A bold handheld port: The Game Gear edition adds a jetpack stage and walker driving to the Genesis formula.
Controls
On the Sega Game Gear, the D-Pad moves your hero and two buttons handle shooting, jumping and throws. - D-Pad: Move, crouch, aim up and down, and climb in supported sections. - Button 1: Fire your weapon, and hold it for continuous shooting. - Button 2: Jump, and combine with movement for slides and acrobatic moves. - D-Pad plus Button 2: Slide along the ground to dodge low attacks and slip under obstacles. - Button 1 plus Button 2: Grab and throw nearby enemies in close combat. - Start Button: Pause the game and view stage progress and options.
Tips and Strategies to Win
Gunstar Heroes rewards experimentation and constant movement over standing still. - Try every weapon combination early, and keep a homing shot ready for fast, flying bosses. - Slide under bullets and through enemies instead of jumping over every attack. - Smash crates and check enemy drops, since health and weapon capsules hide in plain sight. - Learn each Seven Force form separately, because dodging one form’s pattern will not save you in the next.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the difference between Red and Blue in Gunstar Heroes? A: Red uses Free Shot, which lets you move while shooting, while Blue uses Fixed Shot, which locks you in place but lets you aim in eight directions for precise shots.
Q: How does weapon combining work? A: You carry up to two weapons at once, and the pair fuses into a new shot type. For example, combining Flame with another weapon changes its range, power and behavior, so experimenting creates stronger and stranger guns.
