Square Enix's Game Boy Advance adventure sends Sora, Donald and Goofy into Castle Oblivion, where card-based battles and lost memories reshape their journey.

About Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (GBA)

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix and Jupiter and published by Square Enix for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. Created under director Tetsuya Nomura, it bridges the first Kingdom Hearts and its sequel, following Sora, Donald and Goofy into the mysterious Castle Oblivion.

Inside the castle, memories become cards, and every room is built from Sora’s past. A girl named Namine, the cloaked Organization XIII and a second story starring Riku deepen the mystery. Its card combat divided fans at first, but its story is now essential to understanding the series.

Detailed Gameplay

Explore castle floors room by room, building each room from map cards and fighting Heartless in card-based real-time battles.

Build rooms from map cards

  • Earn map cards after battles and use them to create rooms with set properties.
  • Choose room types that spawn treasure, save points, shops or tougher enemies.
  • Manage your deck of map cards, since each room consumes the card you play.
  • Climb floor by floor, defeating a boss on each floor to reach the next story scene.

Fight with attack cards

  • Attacks, magic, items and summons are all cards with values from zero to nine.
  • Play a higher card to break an enemy card and cancel its attack.
  • Stack three cards into a sleight for a powerful combo, at the cost of losing the first card.
  • Reload the deck mid-battle, but note that reloading gets slower as cards are spent.

Play Riku’s Reverse Rebirth

  • After finishing Sora’s story, unlock Riku’s story, which retells the castle from his side.
  • Riku uses a fixed deck that changes by floor, forcing different tactics.
  • Switch to Dark Mode when enough dark points build up for stronger attacks.
  • Face Organization members from Riku’s perspective and learn what happened to him.

Game Highlights

  • Card-based combat: Real-time action fused with deck building and card breaking.
  • A castle built from memories: Rooms shaped by Sora’s past make every floor personal.
  • Two stories in one: Sora’s journey plus Riku’s Reverse Rebirth double the game.
  • Organization XIII: Cloaked villains whose schemes set up the next main game.

Controls

On Game Boy Advance, Chain of Memories uses the D-Pad for movement, face buttons for cards and shoulder buttons for deck actions.

  • D-Pad: Move Sora or Riku and navigate menus and card decks.
  • A Button: Play the selected card, talk and confirm choices.
  • B Button: Cancel a choice or jump in some field areas.
  • L Button: Cycle through cards or scroll the deck during battle.
  • R Button: Cycle through cards or scroll the deck during battle.
  • Start: Pause and open the menu for decks, items and story progress.
  • Select: View the current room map or extra details on some screens.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Deck balance matters more than raw card strength.

  • Keep a mix of low, mid and high cards so you can break enemy attacks without wasting nines.
  • Save zero cards for boss attacks, since zero breaks any card regardless of value.
  • Build sleights around reliable combos and accept losing the first card as their price.
  • Carry healing cards in every deck, because long boss fights drain health fast.
  • In Riku’s story, learn each floor’s fixed deck before charging into its boss.
