Kirby's copy-ability debut! In Kirby's Adventure (1993, NES), swallow enemies to steal their powers and restore the shattered Star Rod across Dream Land's seven worlds.

About Kirby’s Adventure (NES)

Kirby’s Adventure is the game that turned Kirby from a one-trick puffball into a legend. Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo in 1993 — remarkably late in the NES era — it introduced the Copy Ability system that defines the pink hero to this day: swallow an enemy, steal its power, and fight back with fire, swords, lasers, and dozens more.

The story begins when the mischievous King Dedede shatters the Star Rod, the source of all dreams, and scatters its pieces across Dream Land to stop nightmares from flowing. Kirby sets out to recover every piece and restore the Fountain of Dreams. With graphics that pushed the aging NES to its limits and gameplay bursting with variety, this is one of the finest platformers ever made for the system.

Detailed Gameplay

Kirby’s Adventure is a side-scrolling platformer with a twist: Kirby can inhale enemies and objects, then either spit them out as projectiles or swallow them to copy their ability. Across seven worlds and dozens of stages you will run, fly, slide, swim, and battle bosses — plus discover secrets that reward the curious.

Copy Abilities

This is the star of the show. Swallow a fire enemy to breathe flames, a sword knight to swing a blade, a laser foe to fire beams. Abilities include Fire, Ice, Spark, Sword, Hammer, Beam, Stone, UFO, and many more — each with its own attacks. Lose a hit while powered up and the ability pops out as a bouncing star you can re-grab.

Worlds and Stages

Seven worlds — from the grassy Vegetable Valley to the mechanical Orange Ocean and the starry Rainbow Resort — each contain multiple stages with hidden doors, switches, and warp paths. Halfway doors save your progress, and each world ends with a boss guarding a Star Rod piece.

Minigames and Extras

Between stages you can visit the Museum to grab abilities, the Arena for quick boss practice, and three minigames: Crane Fever (grab prizes with a claw), Quick Draw (outdraw opponents), and Egg Catcher (catch falling eggs). They are perfect palate cleansers — and great for extra lives.

Game Highlights

  • The debut of Copy Abilities — the mechanic that defined Kirby forever started right here.
  • Gorgeous late-NES visuals — colorful, detailed sprites that squeezed every drop from the hardware.
  • Seven worlds of variety — platforming, flying, swimming, boss battles, and hidden secrets everywhere.
  • Charming minigames — Crane Fever, Quick Draw, and Egg Catcher break up the adventure.
  • Save anywhere convenience — battery backup lets you tackle this big adventure at your own pace.

Controls

Kirby moves with the D-pad (or arrow keys). One button inhales or uses the current ability; the other jumps. Holding up plus the ability button often triggers special attacks, and pressing down in mid-air performs a slide.

  • D-pad / Arrow keys: move
  • A / Z: inhale / use ability (tap), spit or swallow (after inhaling)
  • B / X: jump (press repeatedly to float)
  • Down + A in air: slide attack
  • Start: pause

Tips and Strategies to Win

  • Experiment with every ability — Stone makes you invincible while transformed, UFO flies through hazards, and Hammer hits like a truck.
  • Re-grab dropped abilities — when hit, your ability pops out as a star; catch it before it bounces away.
  • Use flight to scout — Kirby’s infinite flutter lets you explore for hidden doors and 1UPs most platformers would hide forever.
  • Slide under bosses — many boss attacks are high; a quick slide dodge keeps you safe and positions you for a counter.
  • Play the minigames for lives — a few rounds of Egg Catcher or Crane Fever stock you up before tough worlds.
