About The Legend of Zelda (NES)

The Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES in 1986 in Japan and 1987 in North America. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, it follows a young hero named Link on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. To do so, Link must explore the kingdom of Hyrule and recover the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom hidden deep inside dangerous dungeons.

The game became famous for its open world, non-linear exploration, and sense of discovery. At a time when most games moved in one direction, Zelda let players wander freely, burn bushes to find secrets, bomb cracked walls, and save their progress thanks to a battery in the cartridge — a first for console games. It launched one of gaming’s most beloved series and still feels adventurous today.

Detailed Gameplay

You view Hyrule from a top-down perspective and guide Link across an overworld filled with forests, lakes, mountains, and deserts. Exploration and combat happen in real time, and progress depends on finding the right tools as much as on fighting skill.

Exploring Hyrule

  • Roam the overworld freely and choose which dungeon to tackle next in many cases
  • Talk to old men and women in caves for hints, shops, and heart containers
  • Find rupees by defeating enemies and cutting through hidden passages

Dungeons and Combat

Each dungeon is a labyrinth of rooms, locked doors, keys, puzzles, and a boss guarding a Triforce fragment. Link attacks with his sword, which fires a beam when his health is full, and he can use items such as bombs, a bow and arrows, a boomerang, and a magical rod. A compass and dungeon map help you navigate, while the special item in each labyrinth — like the raft, ladder, or recorder — opens new paths in the world above.

Progression

Collect heart containers to extend Link’s health and stronger swords to deal more damage. After finishing the game, a harder Second Quest remixes the dungeons and secrets for a fresh challenge.

Game Highlights

  • Open Exploration: A non-linear world packed with secrets that rewards curiosity on every screen.
  • Nine Dungeons: Each labyrinth introduces new enemies, puzzles, and a memorable boss fight.
  • Iconic Items: Bombs, the boomerang, bow, and candle turn exploration into clever problem-solving.
  • Second Quest: A full remixed adventure doubles the challenge after the credits.

Controls

Use the NES controller to explore Hyrule and fight with Link’s growing arsenal. - D-Pad: Move Link in four directions - A Button: Swing the sword - B Button: Use the selected item, such as bombs or the boomerang - Start: Open the item subscreen and pause the game - Select: Pause and choose options on menu screens

Tips and Strategies to Win

A little preparation makes Hyrule far less dangerous, especially in the later dungeons. - Buy the Blue Ring as soon as you can save 250 rupees — it halves the damage Link takes. - Search everywhere: burn suspicious trees and bomb odd walls to find hearts, rupees, and shortcuts. - Enter every dungeon fully healed so your sword beam stays active for safe ranged attacks. - Draw your own map notes for the Second Quest, where dungeon layouts and secrets change completely.
