About Mega Man 4 (NES)

Mega Man 4 is an action platformer developed and published by Capcom for the NES, released in Japan in 1991 and in North America in 1992. A year after Dr. Wily’s last defeat, a new villain appears: Russian scientist Dr. Mikhail Cossack challenges Mega Man with eight Robot Masters of his own. The twist, revealed late in the game, is that Wily kidnapped Cossack’s daughter Kalinka and forced him to build the army.

The game is best remembered for introducing the charged Mega Buster - hold the button and release a blast far stronger than a normal shot. With hidden tools, two castles to storm, and some of the series’ best stage design, Mega Man 4 is a high point of the NES era.

Detailed Gameplay

Pick any of eight Robot Master stages in any order. Beat a boss to take its weapon, then exploit the weapon weaknesses of the others - each victory makes the next fight easier if you choose the right order.

The Charged Mega Buster

  • Hold the fire button to charge, then release for a large, powerful charged shot
  • Charged shots chew through mid-size enemies that shrug off normal pellets
  • Keep moving while charging - you can run, jump, and slide with a shot ready
  • Rush returns as your robot dog, with Rush Coil, Rush Jet, and Rush Marine forms

Eight Robot Masters

  • Toad Man and Pharaoh Man open the roster, joined by Ring Man and Dive Man
  • Dust Man, Skull Man, Drill Man, and Bright Man round out Cossack’s eight
  • Each win grants a weapon: Flash Stopper, Rain Flush, Skull Barrier, Pharaoh Shot, and more
  • Weapons follow a weakness cycle - Pharaoh Shot melts Skull Man, Ring Boomerang stops Pharaoh Man

Hidden Tools and Items

  • Find the Wire adapter in Pharaoh Man’s stage to grapple up to high ledges
  • Find the Balloon adapter in Drill Man’s stage to float across pits
  • Energy Tanks, extra lives, and weapon refills hide in risky corners of every stage
  • Dr. Light’s lab between stages lets you check your arsenal

Two Castles

  • Clear the eight stages and storm Dr. Cossack’s icy fortress first
  • The plot twists, and Dr. Wily’s castle opens as a second, harder fortress
  • Boss rush rematches with all eight Robot Masters guard both final approaches
  • Wily’s final machine and capsule fights close out the game

Game Highlights

  • First Charged Buster: Holding fire for a power shot changed Mega Man combat forever.
  • A Villain Twist: Dr. Cossack is a hostage, not a mastermind - Wily pulls the strings.
  • Two Fortresses: Cossack’s castle plus Wily’s castle make this one of the longest NES entries.
  • Hidden Adapters: Wire and Balloon reward explorers with new routes through stages.

Controls

Fight through the stages with the NES controller. - D-Pad: Move Mega Man; press Down plus jump to slide - A Button: Jump - B Button: Fire the Mega Buster; hold to charge a shot - Start: Open the weapon menu and pause - Select: Pause the game

Tips and Strategies to Win

Order is everything - a smart route makes bosses fall fast. - Start with Toad Man: he is easy to dodge, and Rain Flush clears whole screens. - Use Pharaoh Shot on Skull Man and Ring Boomerang on Pharaoh Man to follow the weakness chain. - Grab the Wire and Balloon adapters early - later stages hide Energy Tanks behind them. - Charge shots constantly; a charged blast does the work of several pellets on mini-bosses. - In the boss rush, refill weapon energy between fights and save Energy Tanks for Wily.
