Mega Man X
Play Mega Man X online, the bold SNES reboot of the classic series. Play as X, dash and wall-jump through eight Maverick stages, steal their weapons, and stop Sigma!
About Mega Man X (SNES)
Mega Man X is an action platformer developed and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in Japan in December 1993 and in North America in January 1994. Set about a century after the original Mega Man series, it stars X, an advanced robot built by Dr. Light. When the reploid Sigma leads the Maverick Hunters into rebellion, X joins his friend Zero to hunt down eight powerful Mavericks and stop Sigma before his uprising destroys humanity.
The game reinvented the series rather than simply continuing it. Everything is faster, darker and more fluid: X can dash, climb walls and charge his shots far beyond the classic games, while hidden capsules left by Dr. Light upgrade his armour piece by piece. Its tight controls, interconnected boss weaknesses and secrets in nearly every stage made it one of the most celebrated SNES platformers ever made.
Detailed Gameplay
You can tackle the eight Maverick stages in any order. Defeat a boss and you gain its weapon, which becomes another boss’s weakness — so the order you choose shapes how hard the journey feels.
Movement and Combat
- X-Buster: X’s arm cannon fires small shots, or hold the button to charge a much stronger blast.
- Dash: A burst of speed that extends jumps, dodges attacks and shatters certain walls with the upgraded boots.
- Wall jump: Kick off walls to climb vertical shafts and reach hidden areas other platformers would lock away.
- Boss weapons: Each Maverick grants a weapon such as Homing Torpedo, Storm Tornado or Shotgun Ice, each using its own energy meter.
Upgrades and Secrets
Stages hide Dr. Light capsules that grant the dash boots, stronger armour, a better helmet and a more powerful buster. You can also find Heart Tanks that raise your maximum health, Sub Tanks that store spare energy, and Ride Armor mechs in some stages. After clearing all eight Mavericks, you push through Sigma’s multi-part fortress to a final showdown with Sigma and his pet Velguader.
Game Highlights
- Eight inventive bosses: Chill Penguin, Spark Mandrill, Storm Eagle, Flame Mammoth and the rest each demand a different strategy.
- A living upgrade hunt: Armour capsules, Heart Tanks and Sub Tanks reward players who explore instead of rushing.
- Stage effects: Beating Chill Penguin freezes Flame Mammoth’s lava stage, and other victories reshape later levels too.
- A landmark soundtrack: Driving rock-inspired SNES music, including the iconic Storm Eagle theme.

Tips and Strategies to Win
A smart stage order makes Mega Man X much kinder to new players.
- Start with Chill Penguin. He is the easiest Maverick, and his stage holds the dash boots, which transform the whole game.
- Follow the weakness chain: Shotgun Ice beats Spark Mandrill, whose Electric Spark beats Armored Armadillo, and so on around the loop.
- Revisit cleared stages armed with new weapons to grab Heart Tanks and capsules you could not reach before Sigma’s fortress.
- Save full Sub Tanks for Sigma’s final forms, and use Rolling Shield at close range on his first form.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What order should I play the eight Maverick stages in? A: A friendly order is Chill Penguin, Spark Mandrill, Armored Armadillo, Launch Octopus, Boomer Kuwanger, Sting Chameleon, Storm Eagle, then Flame Mammoth, since each boss you beat gives you the next boss’s weakness.
Q: How do I get the Hadouken secret? A: Collect every upgrade, Heart Tank and Sub Tank, then keep revisiting the end of Armored Armadillo’s stage with full health. A hidden capsule above the final door will appear, and Dr. Light teaches X Ryu’s fireball, which defeats most bosses in one hit.
Q: Can I play Mega Man X online for free? A: Yes. Mega Man X is playable in your browser on RiveGame with no downloads or installation — just open the game page and start playing.
