About Pokemon Crystal Version (Game Boy Color)

Pokemon Crystal Version is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Color, released in Japan in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. It is the enhanced third version of Gold and Silver, returning to the Johto region where a new Trainer leaves New Bark Town, earns eight Gym Badges and eventually crosses into Kanto for eight more. This time the legendary beast Suicune takes centre stage, pursued by researcher Eusine, in a storyline building to an encounter at the Tin Tower.

Crystal made history beyond its region. It was the first Pokemon game to let players choose a female Trainer, Kris, and the first with animated Pokemon sprites that move as battles begin. The Battle Tower also made its debut here.

Detailed Gameplay

You travel Johto town by town, catching and training Pokemon, winning Badges and following the trail of Team Rocket’s revival — then sail to Kanto for eight more Badges.

Training Your Team

  • 251 Pokemon: The complete first and second generations, including new evolutions like Crobat, Steelix and Blissey.
  • New features of the generation: Held items, day-and-night cycles on a real-time clock, breeding at the Day Care, shiny Pokemon and the Special stat split all shape team-building.
  • Type strategy: Dark and Steel types debut in this generation; a team covering many types is essential across sixteen Gyms.

Johto, Kanto and the Battle Tower

Johto’s journey runs through Falkner’s Violet City Gym to Clair’s Dragon den in Blackthorn, then the Elite Four and Champion Lance. Kanto follows at a faster pace, ending with the ultimate test on Mt. Silver. Crystal adds the Battle Tower in Olivine City, where you fight streaks of Trainers with Pokemon at set levels for rare prizes — the series’ first dedicated battle facility. Side adventures include the Ruins of Alph puzzles and hunting the roaming Raikou and Entei.

Game Highlights

  • Suicune’s story: A new narrative thread with Eusine and extra scenes around the legendary beasts.
  • Two regions, 16 Badges: Johto plus a full return trip through Kanto, ending at Mt. Silver.
  • The first Battle Tower: The debut of the post-game battle facilities that became a series staple.

Controls

Crystal uses the compact Game Boy Color controls for exploring, menus and battles.

  • D-Pad: Walk in four directions; move the cursor through menus, the Bag and battle options.
  • A Button: Talk to people, examine signs and objects, and confirm choices.
  • B Button: Cancel and back out of menus.
  • Start: Open the main menu — Pokemon, Pokedex, Pack, Pokegear, Trainer Card, Save and Options.
  • Select: Use a registered item such as the Bicycle or fishing rod with one press.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Sixteen Gyms make Crystal a marathon — smart pacing beats endless grinding.

  • Pick Totodile for the friendliest all-round run, or Cyndaquil for raw speed through early Gyms; Chikorita’s line faces the toughest opening matchups against Flying and Bug Gyms.
  • Catch a Geodude in Dark Cave before Violet City. It walls Falkner and Bugsy, resists Whitney’s feared Rollout Miltank, and stays useful as Golem for most of Johto.
  • Do not waste the Master Ball on Suicune — Crystal guarantees that battle at the Tin Tower and you can save before it. Save the Master Ball for a roaming Raikou or Entei instead.
  • When you reach Kanto, train against Elite Four and Gym Leader rematches arranged through the Pokegear phone before the Mt. Silver finale.
