About Pokemon Emerald Version (Game Boy Advance)

Pokemon Emerald Version is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company for the Game Boy Advance, released in Japan in 2004 and worldwide in 2005. As the enhanced version of Ruby and Sapphire, it returns to the tropical Hoenn region, where you play as Brendan or May, a young Trainer collecting eight Gym Badges while two rival villain teams — Team Aqua and Team Magma — race to awaken the ancient Groudon and Kyogre and reshape the world.

Emerald is remembered as the definitive Hoenn game. Rayquaza takes centre stage to calm the clash of land and sea, Wallace becomes Champion, and after the credits the enormous Battle Frontier opens.

Detailed Gameplay

You journey town to town across Hoenn, catching wild Pokemon, battling Trainers and solving each Gym’s puzzle before facing its Leader for a Badge.

Building Your Team

  • Starters: Choose Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip in Littleroot Town.
  • Type matchups: Six Pokemon per team, four move slots each; winning means covering weaknesses across 17 types.
  • Double Battles: Emerald features many two-on-two battles, and Gym Leaders Tate and Liza specialize in them.
  • Abilities and natures: Every Pokemon has an ability such as Levitate or Intimidate plus a nature that raises one stat and lowers another.

The Hoenn Journey and Battle Frontier

Along the way you dive beneath the sea, climb Mt. Chimney, explore the Weather Institute and finally awaken Rayquaza at Sky Pillar to stop Groudon and Kyogre. The Elite Four — Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia and Drake — guard Champion Wallace’s throne. Victory unlocks the Battle Frontier: seven facilities, including the Battle Tower, Battle Factory and Battle Pike, each ruled by a Frontier Brain you must beat twice for silver and gold Symbols.

Game Highlights

  • Two villain teams: Both Team Aqua and Team Magma drive the story, ending with Rayquaza’s famous intervention.
  • The Battle Frontier: Seven inventive battle facilities offering hundreds of hours of post-game challenge.
  • Animated sprites: Pokemon move as they enter battle for the first time in the series’ handheld history.

Controls

Pokemon Emerald uses the Game Boy Advance controls for exploring, menus and battles.

  • D-Pad: Walk or run; also move the cursor through menus, the Bag and battle options.
  • A Button: Talk to people, examine objects, confirm choices and select moves in battle.
  • B Button: Cancel, back out of menus, and hold while moving to run once you have the Running Shoes.
  • Start: Open the main menu — Pokemon, Pokedex, Bag, PokeNav, Trainer Card, Save and Options.
  • Select: Use a registered Key Item such as the Bicycle or a fishing rod quickly.
  • L / R Buttons: Scroll through boxes and menu pages; L can also act as an extra confirm button depending on settings.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Hoenn is a long adventure, and a balanced, well-levelled team beats a single overworked starter.

  • Pick Mudkip if you want the smoothest Gym run: its Water/Ground evolution Swampert resists or handles Roxanne, Wattson and Flannery brilliantly.
  • Catch a Ralts and a Shroomish early. Gardevoir and Breloom carry the mid-game, and a diverse team of six near even levels beats the Elite Four more safely than one star at level 70.
  • Save your Master Ball. Rayquaza waits at level 70 before the Elite Four in Emerald — the Master Ball guarantees the hardest catch in the story.
  • At the Battle Frontier, build around held items and type coverage, and start with the Battle Factory to earn easy Battle Points.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is different in Emerald compared to Ruby and Sapphire? A: Emerald combines both stories: both villain teams appear, Rayquaza resolves their clash, Wallace is Champion with Juan leading Sootopolis Gym, and the Battle Frontier replaces the lone Battle Tower.

Q: Can I catch Groudon and Kyogre in Emerald? A: Yes. After the main story, the Weather Institute scientist reports strange weather on a route — follow his tips to find Groudon’s cave or Kyogre’s sea chamber, both at level 70.

Q: Can I play Pokemon Emerald Version online for free? A: Yes. Pokemon Emerald Version is playable in your browser on RiveGame with no downloads or installation — just open the game page and start playing.
