About Pokémon Ruby Version (GBA)

Pokémon Ruby Version is Game Freak’s 2002 Game Boy Advance RPG (2003 in the West), paired with Pokémon Sapphire. Set in the tropical Hoenn region, you play a young Trainer who sets out from Littleroot Town to battle eight Gym Leaders, conquer the Pokémon League, and complete the Pokédex.

Ruby introduced the series’ third generation: 135 new Pokémon led by starters Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. The villainous Team Magma seeks to awaken Groudon, the continent-shaping legendary, to expand the landmass — an eco-extremist plot with real stakes. New mechanics like Abilities, Natures, double battles, Pokémon Contests, and Secret Bases made Hoenn feel fresh, and the GBA’s colorful sprites remain gorgeous today.

Detailed Gameplay

Journey Across Hoenn

Travel from beaches to volcanoes, deserts to deep ocean trenches across a diverse region. Eight Gym Leaders test your team with puzzles and type-themed battles, followed by the Elite Four and Champion at Ever Grande City.

Team Magma’s Plot

Team Magma steals the Blue Orb and schemes to awaken Groudon at the Seafloor Cavern. You’ll clash with them repeatedly — including Admins Tabitha and Courtney and leader Maxie — before the legendary showdown decides Hoenn’s fate.

Third-Generation Mechanics

Every Pokémon now has an Ability (like Blaze or Torrent) and a Nature affecting stat growth. Double battles (2v2) debuted here, adding tactical depth, while the refined breeding, berry, and EV systems reward dedicated trainers.

Contests and Secret Bases

Enter Pokémon Contests to show off Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough moves, or carve out a Secret Base in Hoenn’s cliffs and trees to decorate and battle friends. Ruby’s post-game Battle Tower offers endless competitive challenges.

Controls

Move with the D-pad; hold B to run once you have the Running Shoes. Press A to talk, confirm, and interact, B to cancel or go back, and Start to open the menu (Pokédex, Pokémon, Bag, Save). In battle, use the D-pad and A to pick Fight, Bag, Pokémon, or Run, then choose moves. L and R offer shortcuts in some menus. Save often with the menu’s Save option — Hoenn’s wilds are unforgiving.

Tips and Strategies to Win

  1. Pick Torchic for an easier start. Its Fire/Fighting evolution handles the early Gyms well; Mudkip is the safest overall pick for beginners.
  2. Build a balanced team. Cover Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, and Fighting at minimum before the Elite Four.
  3. Exploit Abilities. Intimidate, Levitate, and type-boosting abilities swing tough fights — read what your team can do.
  4. Train against the Elite Four’s types. Sidney (Dark), Phoebe (Ghost), Glacia (Ice), Drake (Dragon), and Champion Steven (Steel/Rock) demand coverage — bring Fire, Fighting, and Water answers.
  5. Use the PokéNav’s Trainer’s Eyes. Rematching trainers across Hoenn is the best way to grind levels before the Elite Four.
