About Secret of Mana (SNES)

Secret of Mana is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square for the SNES, released in Japan and North America in 1993. A boy named Randi pulls a rusty sword from a stone near Potos Village and unwittingly releases monsters across the land. Exiled from home, he learns the blade is the legendary Mana Sword, and joins the rebellious girl Primm and the sprite child Popoi on a quest to restore the sword’s power and stop an empire from reviving the Mana Fortress.

Famous for real-time combat in an era of menus, its colorful world, and three-player cooperative play, Secret of Mana became one of the most loved RPGs on the SNES. Hiroki Kikuta’s debut score gave its lush world an unforgettable voice.

Detailed Gameplay

Combat happens in real time on the exploration screen - no separate battle scenes. A power gauge refills after every swing, so timing attacks matters as much as stats, and the famous Ring Menu lets you pause and command the party without breaking the flow.

Real-Time Combat

  • Attack with a charged power gauge: full-charge swings deal full damage, rushed swings barely scratch
  • Master charged attacks up to level 8 for spectacular weapon techniques
  • Dodge, reposition, and let AI settings control how aggressively companions fight
  • Enemies flash and react in real time, making positioning a real defensive tool

The Ring Menu and Magic

  • Open the Ring Menu to rotate through weapons, items, and spells in a clean circle of icons
  • Eight Elementals grant magic, from Gnome’s earth spells to Undine’s healing water
  • Primm specializes in support and healing magic, Popoi in destructive attack spells
  • Level spells by using them, unlocking stronger versions and new effects

Weapons and Forging

  • Wield eight weapon types: sword, axe, spear, bow, boomerang, glove, javelin, and whip
  • Collect weapon orbs from bosses and chests, then have Watts the blacksmith forge upgrades
  • Each character can equip any weapon, so builds are flexible across the party
  • The Mana Sword grows toward its true power as you gather the eight Mana Seeds

Three-Player Co-op

  • A second and third player can join with a Super Multitap, each controlling a hero directly
  • Travel by Flammie the white dragon to reach floating continents and the Mana Tree
  • Villains Thanatos and the Empire drive a story that ends above the world itself

Game Highlights

  • Real-Time Battles: Action combat with a charge gauge, years ahead of its time.
  • Three-Player Co-op: A full RPG adventure three friends can play together.
  • The Ring Menu: Square’s elegant circular menu, copied by games for decades.
  • Eight Elementals: A deep magic system built around nature spirits and Mana Seeds.

Controls

Adventure with the SNES controller. - D-Pad: Move your hero and navigate the Ring Menu - B Button: Attack with the equipped weapon; hold to charge - A Button: Dash while moving - X Button: Open your character’s Ring Menu for items, weapons, and magic - Y Button: Open the companion command and AI settings menu - Start: Pause and check party status

Tips and Strategies to Win

Patience with the charge gauge wins more fights than levels. - Wait for 100 percent charge before swinging at bosses - half-charged hits waste openings. - Keep Undine’s healing magic leveled on Primm; Cure Water carries the whole mid-game. - Chain spell casting on bosses - repeated quick casts can stunlock many of them. - Forge every weapon orb with Watts before moving on; neglected weapons fall behind fast. - Against the Mana Beast finale, charge the Mana Sword magic to its highest level for real damage.
