About Shantae (GBC)
Shantae is a platform game developed by WayForward and published by Capcom for the Game Boy Color in 2002. Shantae is the half-genie Guardian Genie of Scuttle Town in Sequin Land, armed with a ponytail she whips like a weapon and belly dances that transform her into animals. When the pirate Risky Boots sails in, steals a prototype steam engine, and sets out to gather the four elemental stones to power a superweapon, Shantae chases her across deserts, forests, and haunted wastes to stop her.
Released at the very end of the Game Boy Color’s life, when most players had moved to the GBA, Shantae sold in tiny numbers and became one of the rarest, most collectible cartridges on the system - while its charm launched a beloved series that still continues today.
Detailed Gameplay
Explore a connected world of towns, fields, and labyrinth dungeons in classic Metroidvania fashion. Shantae earns new transformations and items that open previously sealed routes, and the world shifts between day and night, with tougher enemies and exclusive secrets appearing after dark.
Hair-Whip Combat and Dances
- Crack Shantae’s ponytail to defeat enemies, from Risky’s Tinkerbats to scorpions and nagas
- Learn belly dances and input their rhythms to transform: Monkey climbs and leaps, Elephant smashes blocks
- Spider form climbs background webs in dungeons, and the Harpy flies freely with talon attacks
- Buy fighter gear, creams, and dance upgrades in Scuttle Town and other shops
Sequin Land and the Four Stones
- Race Risky Boots to the elemental stones hidden in the Dribble Fountain, Golem Mine, Cackle Mound, and Twinkle Palace labyrinths
- Solve dungeons built around a single transformation, then face guardians guarding each stone
- Meet series regulars from the start: Bolo, Sky, Rottytops, and Shantae’s Uncle Mimic
A Late, Rare Gem
- Playing on a Game Boy Advance unlocks an enhanced mode with brighter colors and the Tinkerbat transformation
- Fireflies, hidden Baby Warp Squids to rescue, and a zombie caravan reward players who explore at night
- Mini-games and a dance parlor offer gems for upgrades between dungeons

Tips and Strategies to Win
Preparation beats pirate cunning every time. - Stock up on potions and creams before labyrinths - checkpoints inside are scarce. - Return to old areas with each new form; stones and fireflies hide behind elephant blocks and high walls. - Explore towns at night for exclusive shops and secrets, but expect much tougher enemies. - The Monkey form’s speed trivializes open fields - dance early and often when traveling. - Against Risky Boots, strike after her charge attacks; her patterns punish greedy whip spam.
