About Shining Force II (Sega Genesis)

Shining Force II is a tactical role-playing game developed by Sonic! Software Planning and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis, released in 1993 in Japan and 1994 in North America. It refines everything the original Shining Force introduced and is regularly ranked among the best strategy RPGs of the 16-bit era. When you play Shining Force II online, you get a long, character-driven campaign with free exploration between battles - a rarity in the genre at the time.

In the kingdom of Granseal, a thief accidentally breaks the seal on the Tower of the Ancients and frees the demon king Zeon, who possesses King Galam and plunges the world toward war. A young swordsman named Bowie, training under the wizard Astral, is chosen to carry the Force Sword and the Jewel of Light. With up to eleven companions at his side, Bowie must gather the Shining Force and stop Zeon’s resurrection before his Greater Devils destroy Parmecia.

Detailed Gameplay

Shining Force II alternates between free-roam town and world exploration, where you talk, shop, and find secrets, and large turn-based battles on grid maps. In battle, characters act in agility order, moving and attacking, casting, or using items one at a time.

Tactical Grid Battles

Positioning wins battles. Archers and mages strike from range, flyers like Peter the phoenix cross any terrain, and healers must stay protected while keeping the front line alive. Terrain affects defense, and many enemies target your leader. If Bowie falls, you lose half your gold and return to a church, so protecting your leader is vital.

The Force, Classes, and Promotion

You recruit about 30 characters but field only 12, building your preferred Force at headquarters, where Caravan stores items and lets you manage the team. At level 20, characters can be promoted into stronger classes - Hero, Paladin, Pegasus Knight, Sorcerer, and more. Special items unlock elite promotions like Baron for Jaha and Master Monk for Sarah, rewarding players who explore every town and chest.

Game Highlights

  • Deep Tactical Battles: Dozens of varied maps, from deserts to battles on a giant’s body, test your strategy.
  • Free Exploration: Walk towns and the world map freely between fights, finding hidden characters, items, and Mithril for custom weapons.
  • Large, Likable Cast: Bowie, Sarah, Kazin, Slade the thief, and Gerhalt the werewolf lead a Force full of personality.
  • Smart Promotion System: Secret promotion items create unique classes that change how your team plays late-game.

Controls

The Sega Genesis controller handles exploration and tactical menus cleanly and comfortably in the browser.

  • D-Pad: Move Bowie in towns and move the cursor on battle grids and in menus.
  • A Button and C Button: Confirm choices, talk to people, open chests, and select commands in battle.
  • B Button: Cancel and speed up messages.
  • Start: Open the main menu for Items, Magic, Equipment, and Status.

Tips and Strategies to Win

A balanced, well-promoted Force beats a rushed one every time.

  • Promote at Level 20: Waiting until level 20 before promoting gives far better long-term stats than promoting early, so be patient with your core team.
  • Use Your Healers Often: Healers gain experience by healing, so top up even small wounds to keep Sarah and Karna leveling steadily.
  • Find the Mithril: Hidden Mithril can be forged by the blacksmith in the secret dwarf village into powerful weapons for your best fighters.
  • Protect Bowie and Ranged Units: Keep Bowie out of leader-snipe range and let flyers and archers soften enemies before your swordsmen engage.
