About Super Castlevania IV (SNES)

Super Castlevania IV is an action platformer developed and published by Konami, released for the SNES in 1991. It retells the original Castlevania story: in 1691, a century after his last defeat, Dracula rises again in Transylvania, and Simon Belmont of the Belmont clan takes up the legendary Vampire Killer whip to cross monster-filled lands and destroy the count.

Built to show off the new 16-bit hardware, the game expanded everything fans loved. Stages scroll, rotate and stretch using the SNES Mode 7 effects, the soundtrack mixes moody orchestral themes with remixes of classics like Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears, and Simon’s whip became the most versatile weapon in the series.

Detailed Gameplay

You guide Simon through eleven stages, from stables, forests and a flooded moat through the castle’s library, treasury and clock tower to Dracula’s keep. Combat is deliberate: enemies approach from every angle, and your whip is both weapon and tool.

The Vampire Killer Whip

  • Eight-way whipping: For the first time in the series, Simon can strike up, down, diagonally and even straight overhead.
  • Whip swing: Hold the attack button and the whip goes limp, letting you twirl it as a shield against projectiles and small enemies.
  • Grapple points: Latch the whip onto rings and swing across pits that no jump could clear.
  • Upgrades: Morning star power-ups lengthen and strengthen the whip, but taking a hit knocks it back down a level.

Sub-Weapons and Stages

Breaking candles drops hearts, which fuel classic sub-weapons: the throwing axe, the boomerang-like cross, holy water, the dagger and the stopwatch that freezes enemies. Stages mix platforming hazards — crumbling bridges, rotating rooms, chandeliers and spike traps — with a boss at the end of most areas, including Medusa, Slogra and Gaibon, Death and finally Dracula himself.

Game Highlights

  • Total whip control: Eight-directional attacks and swinging make Simon feel powerful yet still vulnerable.
  • Spectacle stages: A rotating tunnel, a Mode 7 chandelier room and a collapsing bridge showed off the SNES in 1991.
  • Superb soundtrack: Atmospheric original tracks sit alongside fresh arrangements of Bloody Tears and Vampire Killer.
  • A generous quest: Eleven varied stages plus a password system, so a full run feels like a real journey to Dracula.

Controls

Simon handles best once the SNES buttons below feel natural.

  • D-Pad: Move and crouch; hold Up or diagonal directions to aim the whip, and press Down on stairs to descend.
  • B Button: Jump; Simon’s jump arc is committed, so aim before you leap.
  • Y Button: Crack the whip in the direction held; keep it held to dangle and twirl the whip.
  • R Button: Use the equipped sub-weapon, spending hearts with each throw.
  • X / L Buttons: Not used for Simon’s main actions in this game.
  • Start: Pause the game; Select has no gameplay function.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Patience, not speed, is what carries Simon through Castlevania.

  • Keep the cross sub-weapon whenever you can. It flies out and returns, hitting bosses twice and clearing bats and Medusa heads safely.
  • Use the limp whip as a shield in Medusa-head corridors — twirling it destroys them before they can knock you into a pit.
  • Whip every candle and wall you pass. Hidden pork chops restore health, and extra hearts keep your best sub-weapon fed.
  • Against Dracula, whip his fireballs when cornered and strike his head after his teleport flash — in his final form, only head hits count.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is Super Castlevania IV a remake of the first Castlevania? A: It retells Simon Belmont’s first battle with Dracula with new stages, controls and music. A few areas echo the NES original, but most of the game is brand-new content built for the SNES.

Q: How do passwords work in Super Castlevania IV? A: After a game over on later stages, the game shows a password of symbols. Entering it from the title screen restarts you at the beginning of that stage, though your score and sub-weapon do not carry over.

Q: Can I play Super Castlevania IV online for free? A: Yes. Super Castlevania IV is playable in your browser on RiveGame with no downloads or installation — just open the game page and start playing.
