Super Punch-Out!!
Super Punch-Out!! is Nintendo's SNES boxing classic, sending Little Mac through four circuits and sixteen puzzle-like opponents, from Gabby Jay to the undefeated Nick Bruiser.
About Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)
Super Punch-Out!! is a boxing game developed by Nintendo R&D3 and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo. It launched in North America on September 14, 1994 and in Europe on January 26, 1995, as the SNES follow-up to the beloved NES Punch-Out!! games. Viewed from behind Little Mac, it turns every bout into a puzzle: learn the opponent’s tells, dodge at the right instant, and punish every opening.
Little Mac climbs the World Video Boxing Association ranks through four circuits: Minor, Major, World and Special. Sixteen opponents stand between him and the championship, from the hapless Gabby Jay to the undefeated Nick Bruiser. Colourful characters, exaggerated animations and a strict three-minute limit make each fight tense from the first bell.
Detailed Gameplay
Super Punch-Out!! is not a button masher. Each opponent has a fixed set of attacks, taunts and vulnerable moments, and winning means reading patterns rather than throwing random punches.
Circuits and opponents
- The Minor Circuit opens with Gabby Jay, Bear Hugger, Piston Hurricane and the returning Bald Bull.
- The Major Circuit adds Bob Charlie, Dragon Chan, Masked Muscle and Mr. Sandman.
- The World Circuit brings Aran Ryan, Heike Kagero, Mad Clown and Super Macho Man.
- Clearing the first three circuits undefeated unlocks the Special Circuit: Narcis Prince, Hoy Quarlow, Rick Bruiser and the final champion Nick Bruiser.
Punches, dodges and defence
- Little Mac throws jabs, body blows and hooks, with left and right punches mapped to different buttons.
- Dodge left or right, duck under high attacks, and block to absorb blows you cannot avoid.
- Every opponent telegraphs attacks with a flash, a pose or a sound cue just before striking.
- Dodging at the right moment stuns the opponent briefly, opening them up for a counter combo.
The Power Meter and knockdowns
- Landing punches fills the Power Meter, and a full meter unleashes a powerful uppercut or rapid jab flurry.
- Knock an opponent down three times in a match to win by TKO, or score a full knockout for an instant win.
- If Mac is knocked down, mash buttons quickly to beat the ten count and get back up.
- Matches last three minutes with no rounds: if time expires, the fighter ahead on points is not saved, since a draw counts as a loss for Mac.
Game Highlights
- Sixteen puzzle opponents: Every boxer is a pattern to learn, from Gabby Jay to Nick Bruiser.
- Behind-the-back boxing: The classic Punch-Out!! view, bigger and more expressive on SNES.
- Power Meter drama: Build meter with clean punches, then spend it on a fight-changing uppercut.
- A hidden Special Circuit: An undefeated run unlocks four extra fighters and the true champion.
Controls
On the SNES controller, Super Punch-Out!! splits punches across the face buttons. - D-Pad Left and Right: Dodge left and right around your opponent’s attacks. - D-Pad Down: Duck under high punches. - D-Pad Up: Block incoming attacks. - Y Button: Left jab. - B Button: Right jab. - A Button: Body blow. - X Button: Uppercut when the Power Meter is full. - Start Button: Pause the match.
Tips and Strategies to Win
Patience beats power in Super Punch-Out!!, especially against later circuits. - Watch the first minute of a new opponent’s fight without attacking much, and learn their tells. - Dodge, do not block, whenever possible, since a clean dodge stuns the opponent for a counter. - Save your Power Meter uppercut for a stunned opponent, when it cannot miss. - Aim body blows at fighters who guard high, and switch sides to keep them guessing. - Against trick fighters such as Mad Clown and Hoy Quarlow, wait for their gimmick to finish before punching.
