About Tetris (NES)

Tetris is a puzzle game created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984 and brought to the NES by Nintendo in 1989. Seven shapes made of four blocks — the tetrominoes — fall from the top of a well, and you must rotate and place them to form complete horizontal lines. Completed lines vanish, the stack drops, and the game speeds up relentlessly until the blocks reach the top.

The NES version became famous worldwide, selling millions and turning Tetris into a household name. Its simple rules hide endless depth, and its Type-A endless mode and Type-B challenge mode made it perfect for high-score competition. Decades later, the NES version is still the centerpiece of the Classic Tetris World Championship.

Detailed Gameplay

Tetris is easy to learn in a minute and difficult to master for a lifetime. Every decision about where a piece lands shapes the next twenty moves.

Core Rules

  • Guide falling tetrominoes — I, O, T, S, Z, J, and L — into place
  • Complete a full horizontal line to clear it; clear four lines at once for a Tetris
  • The game ends when the stack reaches the top of the well

Game Modes

Type-A is the endless marathon: score as many points as possible while the speed rises with every ten lines. Type-B gives you a set number of lines to clear, starting with garbage blocks already on the field and a choice of starting height. Scoring rewards bigger clears, with a Tetris worth far more than four single lines, especially at higher levels.

Advanced Play

Skilled players build flat, keep a clean well on one side for the long I piece, and learn techniques like tucking and spinning pieces under overhangs. On NES, managing the delayed auto-shift of the controller at high levels is a skill in itself.

Game Highlights

  • Perfect Simplicity: One rule set, endless replay value, and instant pick-up-and-play fun.
  • The Tetris Clear: Clearing four lines at once never stops feeling satisfying.
  • Rising Speed: Levels keep accelerating until only the best players can survive.
  • Competitive Legacy: The NES version still headlines world championship tournaments today.

Controls

Use the NES controller to move and rotate each falling piece. - D-Pad Left / Right: Move the tetromino sideways - D-Pad Down: Soft drop — make the piece fall faster - A Button: Rotate the piece clockwise - B Button: Rotate the piece counter-clockwise - Start: Pause the game

Tips and Strategies to Win

Good stacking habits are worth more than fast fingers at every level of play. - Keep your stack as flat as possible and avoid creating holes buried under other blocks. - Save one column as a well for the I piece so you can score regular Tetris clears. - Do not build too high on the sides; a balanced surface gives every new piece a home. - Practice on lower levels to learn rotations before the speed becomes overwhelming.
