Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance is Konami's stylish Game Boy Advance adventure, sending Juste Belmont through two mirrored castles with spell-fusion magic.

About Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance is an action role-playing game developed and published by Konami for the Game Boy Advance. It launched in Japan on June 6, 2002, in North America on September 17, 2002 and in Europe on October 11, 2002, as the second Castlevania game on the handheld and a follow-up to Circle of the Moon. Producer Koji Igarashi led the team, with character designs by Ayami Kojima, who had also designed Symphony of the Night.

Set in 1748, fifty years after Simon Belmont ended Dracula’s curse in Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, the game follows Simon’s grandson Juste Belmont. Juste and his friend Maxim Kischine enter a mysterious castle to rescue their kidnapped childhood friend Lydie, only to find the castle split into two overlapping layers. Its bright visuals, fast dash and spell-fusion combat made it one of the most approachable Metroidvania games on the system.

Detailed Gameplay

Harmony of Dissonance is a 2D side-scrolling exploration game: you map a huge castle, gain abilities and return to locked areas with new powers.

Two castles, one map

  • The castle exists as Castle A and Castle B, two layers with mostly the same layout but different enemies, items and secrets.
  • Warp rooms let you switch layers, and the map border tells you which castle you are exploring.
  • A switch or path found in one layer often unlocks progress in the other, so both must be explored.

Whip, dash and subweapons

  • Juste fights with the Vampire Killer whip and can dash with a striking afterimage trailing behind him.
  • Subweapons found around the castle include the dagger, axe, holy water and cross, each with its own arc and range.
  • Armor, accessories and whip upgrades raise attack, defense and special abilities as you explore.

Spell Fusion magic

  • Spell books hidden through the castle, including fire, ice, bolt, wind and summon books, fuse with subweapons.
  • Each book and subweapon pairing creates a different spell, from homing daggers to protective ice orbs.
  • Experimenting with pairings is essential, since some fusions devastate bosses that resist plain whip attacks.

Game Highlights

  • Two castles to untangle: Castle A and Castle B turn one map into a satisfying double puzzle.
  • Spell Fusion combat: Pairing five spell books with subweapons creates dozens of distinct magical attacks.
  • The fastest Belmont on handheld: Juste’s dash and afterimage make movement feel fluid and stylish.
  • A bright, bold look: Cleaner graphics and smoother controls set it apart from the darker Circle of the Moon.

Controls

On the Game Boy Advance, the D-Pad moves Juste and the face buttons handle whip, jump and magic. - D-Pad: Move Juste, crouch and aim subweapons up or down where supported. - A Button: Jump, and double-tap in a direction to dash with Juste’s afterimage. - B Button: Attack with the Vampire Killer whip and use subweapons with a spell book equipped. - L Button: Use a subweapon on its own, without a spell fusion effect. - R Button: Dash quickly in the direction you are facing. - Start Button: Pause the game and open the map, inventory and spell book screens.

Tips and Strategies to Win

Harmony of Dissonance rewards exploration and experimentation more than brute force. - Check the map border often, since a dead end in Castle A usually has its answer in Castle B. - Try every spell book with every subweapon, and note the fusions that shred bosses. - Dash through enemy attacks instead of jumping over them, since Juste’s dash covers ground fast. - Farm hearts from candles before boss rooms so your best fusion spells are ready to cast.
