About Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. Schoolboy Marche Radiuju and his friends Mewt Randell and Ritz Malheur open an old grimoire in their snowy town of St. Ivalice - and wake up in Ivalice itself, a living fantasy world of clans, crystals, and roaming monsters. Mewt rules the realm as prince and refuses to leave, so Marche sets out to find a way home, questioning whether a perfect dream world is worth escaping at all.
A handheld spin-off of the PlayStation’s Final Fantasy Tactics, it rebuilt the formula for portable play: shorter, punchier battles, a clan to manage between missions, and a bittersweet story about grief, escapism, and growing up that made it one of the GBA’s most loved RPGs.
Detailed Gameplay
Battles play out in turns on isometric grid maps, where position, height, and facing decide everything. Between fights you run a clan: accept missions at pubs, dispatch members on errands, and march across a world map whose locations you place yourself as the story unfolds.
Jobs and Races
- Five races - Human, Moogle, Viera, Bangaa, and Nu Mou - each with its own job list
- Switch between jobs like Soldier, Black Mage, Archer, and Thief, then unlock advanced jobs such as Ninja, Assassin, and Dragoon by mastering abilities
- Learn abilities from equipped weapons and armor, then keep them forever once mastered
The Laws and Judges
- Armored Judges referee every battle and enforce daily Laws that forbid specific actions, from certain weapons to healing itself
- Breaking a law earns a yellow or red card - red cards send the offender straight to prison
- Use Law Cards to add, remove, or exploit rules and turn the Judge into your best weapon
Clan Life and Missions
- Tackle around 300 missions: story battles, turf wars, rescues, and dispatch quests
- Place new locations on the world map yourself - placement can reveal hidden treasure
- Call race-specific Totema summons, earned by defeating the great beasts guarding Ivalice

Tips and Strategies to Win
Smart clans win before the first sword swings. - Check the day’s Laws before every battle and swap gear or jobs to stay legal. - Keep a balanced clan - a healer, a ranged unit, and a heavy hitter cover most missions. - Send spare members on dispatch missions constantly; they return with loot and experience. - Gang up on one enemy at a time and attack from the side or back for better hit rates. - Free jailed members promptly - an empty bench makes story battles far harder.
