About Metroid Fusion (Game Boy Advance)
Metroid Fusion is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002. After a mission on planet SR388, bounty hunter Samus Aran is infected by the X Parasite, an organism that copies its host perfectly. Federation surgeons save her with a vaccine made from Metroid DNA, but she loses most of her suit’s powers — and a parasite copy of Samus at full strength, the SA-X, is loose aboard the BSL station she is sent to investigate.
Fusion is the most story-driven and frightening classic Metroid. A computer officer Samus nicknames Adam directs her between sectors. The SA-X cannot be fought — only fled — and its echoing footsteps created some of the tensest moments on the GBA.
Detailed Gameplay
The BSL station is divided into the Main Deck and six themed sectors. Adam opens new areas in a guided order, but exploration and hidden passages still fill every sector.
Rebuilding Samus
- Absorbing the X: Defeated enemies release X Parasites: yellow X restore health, green X restore missiles and bombs, and rare red X refill a large amount of everything.
- Stolen abilities: Bosses hold Core-X containing Samus’s lost powers: the Morph Ball, Charge Beam, Wide Beam, Varia Suit, Power Bombs, Space Jump and Plasma Beam all return one by one.
- Fusion Suit: Samus’s altered suit takes double damage early on but absorbs X naturally, making resource management central to survival.
The SA-X and Station Bosses
At scripted moments the SA-X stalks Samus through a sector: hide, run, or freeze in a corner and hope — contact means death for most of the game. Bosses guard each ability, including the giant spider Arachnus, the screen-filling Nightmare whose gravity warps your jumps, and a returning Ridley form in the frozen sector. Late secrets — a hidden Metroid breeding programme — turn the mission into a race to escape.
Game Highlights
- The SA-X: One of gaming’s great horror pursuers — an unbeatable mirror of Samus hunting you through the dark.
- A gripping story: Conversations with Adam and Samus’s own narration drive the plot.
- Brilliant bosses: Nightmare, Serris and Ridley headline a roster of the series’ best handheld fights.
Controls
Samus’s full moveset returns on the Game Boy Advance pad as you recover each ability.
- D-Pad: Move and crouch; hold Down twice to curl into the Morph Ball, and aim diagonally while running.
- A Button: Jump — and once earned, the Spin Jump, Screw Attack and Space Jump all flow from it.
- B Button: Fire your beam; hold to charge once the Charge Beam is recovered. In Morph Ball form, B plants bombs.

Tips and Strategies to Win
Fusion is more linear than Super Metroid, but its bosses hit hard — preparation matters more than exploration order.
- When the SA-X appears, never fight it before the final encounter. Run, and hide in Morph Ball under platforms when it patrols above you.
- After a boss dies, its floating Core-X shoots at you — break its shell with charged shots quickly before it escapes.
- Top up on X constantly. Red X from tough enemies restore everything, so farm a safe room near save points before Nightmare and the final bosses.
- Bomb every suspicious floor and wall in Sector 4 and the Main Deck. Fusion hides missile and Power Bomb tanks behind scenery that looks completely solid.
