About Super Metroid (SNES)

Super Metroid is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the SNES in 1994. Samus Aran returns to planet Zebes after Ridley steals the last Metroid larva from the Ceres space colony. Alone in the planet’s caverns, she must recover her abilities, face the Space Pirates, and confront the monstrous Mother Brain once again.

The game is famous for its atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and open exploration with almost no dialogue. Its map design — where every upgrade unlocks new routes through familiar areas — helped define the Metroidvania genre. Super Metroid is consistently ranked among the greatest games ever made, and its haunting finale remains unforgettable.

Detailed Gameplay

Super Metroid is a side-scrolling exploration game set in one large, connected world. You start weak and grow powerful as you recover Samus’s suit upgrades.

Exploring Zebes

  • Traverse Crateria, Brinstar, Norfair, Wrecked Ship, Maridia, and Tourian
  • Backtrack with new abilities to open doors, shafts, and secrets you passed earlier
  • Save at save stations and refill energy and missiles at recharge rooms

Upgrades and Abilities

Key finds include the Morph Ball, Bombs, Charge Beam, Ice Beam, Grappling Beam, X-Ray Scope, Space Jump, and Screw Attack. Missile and Super Missile tanks expand your firepower, while Energy Tanks and the Gravity Suit let Samus survive lava, water, and the toughest boss arenas.

Boss Battles

Four major guardians — Kraid, Phantoon, Draygon, and Ridley — guard the path to Tourian. Each fight demands a different mix of missiles, movement, and nerve, and defeating all four opens the final descent to Mother Brain.

Game Highlights

  • Atmospheric World: Zebes feels alive and lonely, told through music, art, and silence.
  • Perfect Progression: Every upgrade makes Samus faster, stronger, and more fun to control.
  • Legendary Bosses: Kraid, Ridley, and Mother Brain deliver iconic, cinematic battles.
  • Speedrun Classic: Sequence breaks and skillful play make it a speedrunning masterpiece.

Controls

Use the SNES controller to aim, jump, and fire with full precision. - D-Pad: Move, crouch, aim up and down, and morph in combination with other inputs - B Button: Jump, and wall jump off single walls with timing - Y Button: Fire the beam and missiles, hold to charge - X Button: Cancel weapon selection and use certain items - L / R Buttons: Aim diagonally up or down while standing or moving - Select: Switch between missiles, Super Missiles, Power Bombs, and special tools - Start: Open the map and status screen

Tips and Strategies to Win

Exploration is the game — if a path looks blocked, a new power is usually the answer. - Shoot and bomb suspicious floors and walls; Zebes hides passages in almost every area. - Save missiles for boss fights and learn each guardian’s safe spots before going aggressive. - Practice the wall jump in Crateria’s shaft — it opens shortcuts and early upgrades. - Keep exploring after getting the Power Bombs; many Energy Tanks sit behind orange doors.
