Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II is Capcom's definitive 16-bit fighter, expanding the World Warrior Tournament to sixteen fighters with Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long and T. Hawk joining the classic cast.
About Super Street Fighter II (SNES)
Super Street Fighter II is a fighting game developed and published by Capcom, first released in arcades in September 1993 and ported to the Super Nintendo in 1994. Subtitled The New Challengers, it is the fourth version of Street Fighter II and the first built on Capcom’s CP System II hardware, with redrawn graphics, remastered music and a rebalanced cast.
The World Warrior Tournament returns, with Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and the rest of the original twelve joined by four newcomers. The SNES version preserves the arcade roster of sixteen fighters, each with a home stage, and adds Group Battle and Time Challenge modes alongside the classic arcade ladder.
Detailed Gameplay
Super Street Fighter II is a best-of-three-rounds fighter built on six-button attacks, special moves and precise spacing. The arcade ladder pits you against eight random opponents followed by the four Grand Masters: Balrog, Vega, Sagat and M. Bison.
The four new challengers
- Cammy is a fast British special forces fighter whose Spiral Arrow and Cannon Spike close distance brutally.
- Dee Jay is a Jamaican kickboxer and musician whose Max Out projectile and Jackknife Maximum cover air and ground.
- Fei Long is a Hong Kong film star modelled on Bruce Lee, with rapid Rekka Ken punches and a flying kick.
- T. Hawk is a powerful Mexican grappler whose Condor Dive and Mexican Typhoon punish careless jumps.
Returning warriors, rebalanced
- All twelve fighters from Street Fighter II Turbo return, many with a new move or adjusted balance.
- Ryu gains a more powerful red fireball, while Ken’s flaming Dragon Punch hits harder.
- Chun-Li, Guile, Dhalsim, Blanka, Zangief, E. Honda and the rest keep their core styles with refined timing.
- The four Grand Masters remain the final gauntlet, each with distinct reach, speed and trickery.
Combos, scoring and modes
- Super Street Fighter II introduces an on-screen combo counter, Capcom’s first formal nod to combo play.
- Scoring rewards first attacks, multi-hit combos and comebacks, encouraging aggressive play.
- Arcade mode follows the tournament ladder, while Versus mode lets two players fight head to head.
- Group Battle runs team elimination matches, and Time Challenge races the clock for the best clear time.

Controls
On the SNES controller, Super Street Fighter II uses all six face and shoulder buttons for attacks. - D-Pad: Move, crouch, jump and block by holding away from your opponent. - Y Button: Light punch. - X Button: Medium punch. - L Button: Heavy punch. - B Button: Light kick. - A Button: Medium kick. - R Button: Heavy kick. - Start Button: Pause the match.
Tips and Strategies to Win
Street Fighter II rewards spacing, patience and punishing mistakes more than wild aggression. - Learn one fighter deeply before trying the whole roster, especially their anti-air move. - Use light attacks to poke safely, and save heavy attacks for guaranteed punishes. - Block by holding away from your opponent, and crouch-block to stop low attacks. - Jump only when your opponent cannot anti-air you, since a mistimed jump means a free combo against you. - Practise special move motions slowly first, then speed them up until they work under pressure.
